Google Maps AR Integration

First-ever AR activation inside Google Maps Platform—

in time for the Paris Olympics.

The Goal

Context & Brief

Ahead of I/O 2024, Google AR/VR, Arts & Culture, and Maps teamed up to debut immersive 3D geospatial AR directly in the Maps app.

Challenge

Rebuild 16 Paris icons (Eiffel Tower, 1900 Expo pavilions, etc.) in <20 MB assets that load instantly for a billion users, and produce a premium showcase video for Google I/O 2024.

KPI

Position Google Maps as a simple platform for immersive, brandable interactions that let cities and brands market to consumers.

Solution

A way to to time-travel.

AR used to turn ‘users’ into time travelers of 1900 Paris or 1789 Notre Dame using Google Maps geospatial AR: democratizing AR for 1 billion monthly Maps and biggest barrier to AR adoption: discoverability inside apps people already use.

See never-built Eiffel design concepts from 1900

Search a landmark in Maps ➜ tap “AR Experience” ➜ View AR through the camera or remotely via Street View.

Viewing Paris through time.

AR changes the world you are in to 1900-era Paris, users can view unrealized Eiffel Tower designs and the once-temporary Exposition Universelle pavilions.

Eiffel Revitalized | Inspiration

These immersive experiences — available right from Google Maps — let you experience Parisian landmarks in new ways.

View on Maps, From Wherever

The immersive experience is viewable wherever users are through street view on Google Maps.

Geospatial Tour Guide, At Location

The visual ‘stunning’ quality of the composition was the most important aspect to get right.
